Mr. Irwin, my music teacher in high school, used to say, "If you are going to make a mistake, make a big one. Don't make a gray spot on a gray wall. Make a red spot. Don't make the mistake of being timid."
I made a red spot today. I went bold. I screwed up. I made a mess. And now I'm kicking myself. But, I'm thinking about all of the times that I've been timid. That I've held off doing something because it was scary or seemed difficult. And I'm wondering: Is it better to be bold and risk messing up for everyone to see, or to be timid and cautious and careful?

I think it's much better to be bold! You learn so much from mistakes and "coloring outside the lines", where being timid can keep you from discovering new things! Hang in there - and don't beat yourself up too much!
